# Tags

Create tags, put them on donations and activity, and use them to filter contacts and reports.

Tags label donations and other activity, such as a campaign, an event or an appeal. Create and manage them from the Contacts dropdown > **Tags**.

Tags go on donations and activity. [Groups](https://www.fundhero.com/help/groups/) go on contacts.

## Create a tag

1. Open **Contacts** in the main navigation.
2. Open the dropdown that says **Contacts** and choose **Tags**.
3. Select **Add Tag**.
4. Enter the name under "Enter the new tag name below:" and select **Save**.

Tag names must be unique, ignoring capitals. If the name is taken, FundHero shows "Tag name ... already exists".

The **Tags** list has a **Tag Name** column. Use the **Search Tags** box above it to find a tag.

## Rename or delete a tag

- **Rename:** open the row menu and choose **Rename Tag**, edit the name and select **Save**.
- **Delete:** open the row menu and choose **Delete Tag**. To delete several, tick two or more tags and select **Delete Tags** in the bar. Confirm with **Confirm**.

Deleting a tag also removes it from the donations that had it.

## Put a tag on a donation or activity

When your team has at least one tag, the forms on a contact's **Add Interaction** menu include a **Search Tags** box. That covers donations, pledges, actions, tasks and notes. Pick one or more tags and select **Save**.

To tag something that already exists, open the three-dot menu on its timeline card, choose **Edit**, change **Tags**, and select **Save**.

To tag a whole batch, pick a tag when you [import donations](https://www.fundhero.com/help/import-donations/). It is added to every donation in that import.

## Automatic tags

Gifts that come from a monthly recurring donation carry a **Recurring** tag. Once your team has at least one tag of its own, **Recurring** also appears in the **Tags** list. It is managed by FundHero, so don't rename or delete it. Each donation page also has a read-only **Activity Tag** in the editor.

## Use tags to find things

- **Filters** > **Tags** on the contacts list finds contacts whose donations or activity carry the tags you choose. See [Search and filter contacts](https://www.fundhero.com/help/search-and-filter-contacts/).
- The smart group builder has a **Tags** condition. See [Build a smart group](https://www.fundhero.com/help/build-a-smart-group/).
- Reports have a **Select Donation Tag** filter. On the Basic plan, report tags are locked and the report shows **Unlock Tags**. Creating tags and tagging donations is not locked.
