Processing fee coverage

How the "Cover processing fees" option works for donors and how to turn it off.

Updated

Fee coverage is on by default. Donors can add a small amount to their gift so your team receives the full donation, and you can turn the option off for a page with Disable Fee Coverage in the editor.

What donors see

After donors enter their details, a Cover processing fees switch appears with the text "Add $X to your donation to make sure [your page title] receives 100% of your contribution."

The amount is worked out so that, once the fees are taken from the larger total, you still receive the original gift. The fees are 2% (FundHero) plus 2.9% and $0.30 (Stripe), which is 4.9% + $0.30 of what the donor is charged. For example, on a $100 gift the switch adds $5.47.

If the donor leaves the switch off, the fees come out of your payout instead.

The option is hidden when adding the fee to the gift would take the total over the page’s Set Max Donation Amount.

Turn it off for a page

  1. Open Donation Pages, open the menu on the page’s card and select Edit.
  2. Find Disable Fee Coverage. The text above the switch says whether fee coverage is currently turned on or off.
  3. Switch on Disable Fee Coverage. Donors will no longer be offered the option.
  4. Select Save.

To turn fee coverage back on, switch Disable Fee Coverage off and save.

See the effect in your results

Donations where the donor covered the fee show a Power Up marker, with the amount saved, in Recent Donations on the page’s screen.

In Reports, run the Donation Report. These columns break the money down:

  • Total Charged: the full amount charged to the donor’s card.
  • Fee Paid by Donor: the fee, when the donor chose to cover it.
  • Fee Paid by User: the fee, when the donor did not.
  • Total Transfer: what is sent to your bank account, which is the total minus the fee.

For the full fee breakdown, see the Payments and payouts topic.
